Math-Specific Learning Skills Activities

I definitely believe learning how to learn is by far the most important dimension of your work as a student. Thus, I make a concerted effort to help you develop professional learning skills that you can use in all of your courses. For more about this, please see my Study Skills Activities Page.

With that said, I believe that when studying mathematics, there are a large set of specialized learning skills that can be very useful when developing your ability to learn and do math. Moreover, I believe these skills are not taught at a systemic level in US higher education. There are, of course, some very special teachers who make a concerted effort to teach these skills in their college classes. But, in my experience, these type of educators are very rare outliers.

I want to be one of these outliers. Below, I provide with a number of activities to develop your math-specific learning skills. These are time-tested and have helped me and many of my students thrive in math-heavy courses. May you find something useful and enjoy the journey!

How to Pass Math Classes

Sadly, there is a difference between learning math and earning passing grades in math classes. Earning grades in math classes is all about learning how to navigate a deeply flawed educational system. On the other hand, learning math is about growing your brain and building new math knowledge.

Below are some resources to help navigate our college education system. These are designed to support your effort to earn passing grades in math classes.

Useful Links and Reference Material for Building Your Math-Specific Learning Skills

A great way to get involved with the larger math community is to join one of the many math-specific professional organizations. Once you’ve done so, I recommend that you become active in these communities. The online websites for these societies have great resources for students. Moreover, many of these societies sponsor professional conferences and other great events for learners of math. As an added benefit, student memberships to these societies are often free of charge or very cheap compared to the price of membership for working professionals who have finished their formal schooling. Below are some of my favorite math-specific professional societies. Many of these have a national presence across the USA and even enjoy international renown. I’ve listed my favorite societies in a special order. I start with my most favorite and then move down the list to my next favorite, and so on. Let me be very clear and say all of these societies do spectacular work!

  1. SIAM: Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics

  2. MAA: Mathematics Association of America

  3. AMS: American Mathematics Society
